Rules of the real world

Quoting Martin Luther, from "Commentary on Galatians":

"But the hypocrits are not of this sort, for they think to obtain "righteousness" by works.... and by works, to make the person just and acceptable. For they dream, 'We that are sinners and unrighteous, will be made righteous'...... But, to make righteous (linked) is the work of the Divine Majesty alone.... and not of any creature -- either in heaven, or on earth."

7/15/01

In March 1997, a C-SPAN guest -- a minister of a "non-denominational Christian church" -- said the following:
"Religion is man's attempt to become acceptable to God."

To me, there is some validity in that statement, especailly if one is considering "religion".... rather than "spirituality".

What do you think? Give it some thought.

6/30/01

A JNT "Notion"

Look around a room in your house -- your "home". Gaze at each item you have acquired over a period of years. Think back. Where did each keepsake come from? What person(s) do you identify with that article? Is there a "story" that goes with the item? Is there a "memory" with each keepsake?

Invariably, you will be able to recall a person, or a place, or an event, or a date, or a "circumstance".... or a "story".... that goes with each "article". In computer parlance, each item initiates, in your mind, a "MACRO".... a sequence of thoughts and memories.

Therefore, almost every "thing" in your home has a special significance to you -- a "meaning" that causes you to cherish the item.... and to include it among your prized possessions.

LIGHT from DARKNESS (linked). CLICK the link to open the full "tablet", in EASY-PRINT Format. (6/12/01)

I believe that in God's progressive plan of evolution for our World -- at a moment when God was satisfied that the time was right, in His opinion -- God spoke the earth-shaking words, "Let there be light".... and by so ordaining, God caused His "human" creations to become distinct
individual beings -- "enlightenend" by awareness of their own origin, and their finiteness -- and mindful of Him who caused their creation. By this illumination from God, "man" was allowed to "evolve", and to become separated from the "dark" universe.... the "darkness" of insouciance, and obliviousness, and ignorance.... the "fate" of all other created "organisms".

A paragraph from the chapter
Racism and "anti-racism" (linked). From the Internet book "The Doctor's Terrific Tablets"

All of us should understand that racism, prejudice, intolerance, and discrimination among human-beings are only peripherally related to skin-color. Other causative factors predominate, including.... individual behavior; personal habits; cultural variations; interpersonal jealousies; intellectual capacity; "family" characteristics; social status; age; schooling and education; ambition and energy; "substance" use-and-abuse; economic disparities; marital status; "religious" beliefs; sexual "persuasion"; health; geographic location; national mores; political proclivities; language/communication barriers; physical attributes (personal appearance); psychological quirks; disabilities; and on and on. Each of these factors is just as much a part of the discrimination-intolerance "WEDGE" -- as is skin-color.

If ALL of us human-beings were "people of color".... one identical color, such as orange.... we would quickly ascertain that all our other humanly prejudices would be precisely as evident as they are now.

2/21/01

A paragraph from "Children of God" (linked)

A personal point: the "children of God" are not "robots", or God's "puppets" (as I have heard certain church-goers frivolously postulate). No...... God's children are God's individual human-beings -- each under the constant watchful eye of God -- each being guided and guarded and protected and molded and developed and instructed and disciplined and loved...... precisely like a loving and caring "human" mother and father "raise", and guard, and teach, and train their own offspring.

Individuation, by God" (linked)

"RULES" of the real world:

( The "Golden Rule"..... the "The Silver Rule"….and "The Brass Rule" )

I. "The GOLDEN Rule":

A.
Traditional Version: "Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you."

B. Secular Version..... "Do unto others, before they do unto you."

C. Business Version..... "If you've got the GOLD, you make the rules."

II. "The SILVER Rule" (adapted from "Grandaddy's Wisdom", ):

"After me, you come first."

III. "The BRASS Rule":

"What have you done for me, lately?"

Quoting Ben Haden (a contemporary religionist, and television preacher, and Presbyterian minister) in his quotation ascribed to "Dorothy Sayers", an "English writer":

"The importance of any religion is NOT that it pleases us, but that it is TRUE."

8/11/00

I'll wager that there are very few "Americans" who are familiar with these beautiful and true words of the fourth stanza of our National Anthem.

O, thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation --
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just;
And this be our motto:
"In God is our trust."
And the Star-Spangled Banner, in triumph shall wave,
O'er the land of the free -- and the home of the brave.

7/8/00

Two paragraphs from "God's Individuation" (linked)

So, what do you say? Does God "individuate" each one of His accepted human creations? Or, does God-the-Creator walk-away from the process, and leave the development and maturation of God's people to the forces-of-nature? And, of even greater importance..... does the Almighty-God-of Heaven-and-Earth-and-Universe frivolously abandon the spiritual development of His "chosen" creations -- to the multiplicity of churchy arguments and claims and disputes and fights and wars and hates..... of countless doctrinally-frozen, sometimes-supercilious, frequently hostile religious organizations? OR.... does God Himself carefully and lovingly "manage" the timing and the method of the spiritual awakening of each of His "children"?

I say that God personally designs and forms each of His "chosen" individuals. I believe, also, that God personally guides the spiritual awakening and development and maturation of His accepted children. I consider the entire lifelong process to be under the watchful eye of God Himself..... and I believe that God molds, guides, bends, plants, prunes, disciplines and "saves" those whom He "accepts", for His own reasons...... irrespective of the begging and pleading and threats and warnings of "organized" institutional churches, religions, and rigidly doctrinal groups.

6/13/00
A paragraph from: "
God's People -- who are they, and how do you get to be one?" (linked)

Does anyone believe that the Sovereign God-of-the-Universe -- without any plan or purpose for that which He is creating -- casually dumps into a cauldron, a batch of skin and bones, arteries and veins, hearts and lungs -- along with a sprinkle of a variegated DNA..... and that our Creator-God then walks away, and frivolously abandons the "forming" of the resultant human-beings to the "discretion" and whim of Mother-Nature, and Father-Big-Bang?

Do YOU believe that God-Almighty leaves the design and development of "God's people", in the hands of "the-forces-of-nature" -- and that God then says to Himself, "Now..... let's see what 'luck' and 'chance' and 'chaos' can come up with..... then I'll decide, later, which humans I'll keep and 'save' and admit to My Kingdom.... and which other humans I'll discard, or destroy..... or condemn to eternal damnation."?

Excerpted from "Pekingese, Great Danes, and The Church" ("Reformers and Converters")
2/8/00

You and I may wish that God had made us different than the way we are...... and "the world" may try to "convert" us into another shape which it prefers.... and our "leaders", and our "churches", and the "Big Dogs" may attempt to "re-shape" us -- to fulfill their criteria of "truth" and "correctness" and function, and "works", and "beliefs".

But....... whether they or you or I like it or not -- all of us will continue to BE precisely what God ordained for us, and what He has made us to be -- and we can only hope to "produce" more and better of that for which we were "created". Whether we are a Pekingese, or an apple tree, or a thistle -- or just ourselves -- we will never cause ourselves to become a different creation, in the sight of God. God knows us. We are (and always shall be) exactly what God created us to be; and we will continue to function and "produce" as God mandated, when He created us.

Quoted from the tablet
"
Religion, Science, and Scientists" (See link)

Posted 2/7/00

Do you know of any "scientist" who would say that humans "created" electricity -- or that an "engineer" decided the direction that electrons flow; or that a mechanical genius invented the "inborn" electrical characteristics (piezo-currents) of "silicone chips"; or that the human mind conceived and manufactured fossil fuels, and designed the mechanical forces that internal combustion engines utilize? Did the "Big Bang" invent "light amplification by the stimulation of the emission of radiation" (L.A.S.E.R.) -- or did humans not simply discover and utilize what Almighty God Himself caused and created for the benefit of us human-beings? Did the mind of man generate the gravitational forces that control the orbits of satellites?

How ludicrous the questions become !

Surely no engineer, or "scientist", would say, "There cannot be a God, because I cannot see Him." Dear goodness, Linda, how many previously "invisible" facts ("truths") have "come to light", to be "seen" (especially within the past 50 years)....... "truths" that no self-proclaimed "scientist" would ever have dreamed of (or "believed" in) -- if he had depended upon actual "visualization" -- before he could become "convinced".

Paragraphs copied from:
"
ALL of God's people are ministers" (linked)

Are the prayers of a preacher any more effective with God, than your fervent prayers -- and mine? Are Sunday ceremonial invocations, in a great cathedral, any more audible to our God -- and any more powerful -- than an individual's earnest and honest and heartfelt conversations with God? Are our sincere pleas and petitions to God any less influential, because we have prayed at home, or in a closet, or in an automobile? Must my prayers to God be heard by other humans, in order to be made effective? Silly questions! After all, our prayers are for God to hear. (See link, "Prayer and Praying").

A degree in theology does not generate holiness, or righteousness, or acceptability, in the eyes of God. Training in a seminary may help a novice to learn "facts" about the Bible, and techniques of sermonizing -- but God alone determines the power and effect and influence, of each of His servants -- His "ministers".

Copied from the tablet: "Prayer and Praying"

10/24/99

I believe that God wants His people to "converse" with Him, in prayer. I believe that every prayer we pray, is inspired by God. Yes, God Himself leads us into circumstances and conditions that generate in us the desire and the need to pray. Our "need" to pray is surely one of the ways that God uses to change us -- and to re-direct us. Many times, our being "brought low", in disappointment or in worry or in sadness, is a condition that causes us to turn to God. Hurts and pains and disappointments, inspired by God, return us -- and our thoughts and our plans -- to God.

I believe that every prayer of a Godsperson is answered by God...... "positively" answered...... not "negatively" answered. I do not concur with the "yes, no, maybe, or later" concept that I have heard some preachers propose. I accept that I am inspired to pray, from within my very soul, for reasons that God chooses. That is, God inspires in His people the will to pray, and the need to pray -- for that which God already knows He wants for us -- and has planned for us. God will not say "No", or "Later" when we have been led to pray for those things which God Himself has ordained for us.

10/21/99

A paragraph from the tablet:
"
God, the Holy Spirit" (Linked).

My understanding is that the effects of God, and the works of God, and the indwelling power of God, and the bestowing of the "gifts" of God....... are all of the same "origin"; the same "cause"; the same "source" -- whether one refers to this "source" as "God", or "Lord", or "Lord God", or "Lord Jesus", or "Jesus", or "Christ", or "Christ Jesus", or "Savior", or "Messiah", or "Spirit of God", or "Holy Spirit of God", or "Comforter", or "Advocate", or "Holy Spirit", or "Holy Ghost", or "Spirit of Truth".

8/26/99

A Paragraph from "Letter to my brother"

One last point, then I will let your brain rest, for now.

PJT and I do not agree that we humans "put our trust in God". Everything that we have deciphered from the Bible says that the "putting of faith" is by God -- from God -- into His people. Faith is a gift from God -- (see link). Faith cannot be manufactured, or pretended, or simply "tried".

As John Calvin said, in "Institutes of Christian Religion": "If, at any time, we are troubled at the small number of those who believe, let us remember that no one can understand the mysteries of God, except those to whom it is given."

A poem, by
Dr. John Todd,
written in 1991, after the death of a dear canine friend.

FLOWERS FOR PENELOPE

(A eulogy for our daughter's Sheltie, who helped to "raise" our grandchildren)

This poem should be read out loud.

Born "Bernice" -- canine "so cute";
Later "Penelope", to add dignity.
Then "Penny", to portray our endearment.

A sweet friend she came to be;
A "dear beast", we liked to say
(But "largely human", we knew).

For nine fast years, she served her own --
Not highly paid, but greatly rewarded.
She loved without shame;
And earned love in return --
Human love; sweet love.

She devoted her life, her living,
To her "little people" --
Guarding, and shepherding, and watching --
And "helping", and joining.

Then, the time came when she had to go.
(Barely a moment to say goodbye.)
Gone to the forever place, where canine friends abide --
To wait, waiting again,
For the voices of her dear ones;
Maybe sitting at the feet of God;
Perhaps glorying in a promised dogly peace.
But waiting, and longing, and looking
For the adored ones -- of this world.
(We know Penny is "there", waiting.)

So, this is how we think of Penelope,
Our Penny.
We think that in her heaven,
She loves us still.
And, in our "human" world -- we know that
We cherish our thoughts and memories
Of her.
Somehow -- we believe that we will romp with her,
Again;
And hug, and pet, and laugh,
In a most unguarded way.

These flowers are for you, Penelope.

"White Shoes"

A poem by John Todd, written in 1991, for his grandson, JosephWinters Perkins III. ("Joe-Baby") -- to commemorate Joe-Baby's first pair of shoes, when he was 10 months old.

"Win" (no longer called "Joe-Baby") is the son of our daughter, Amy Louise Todd Perkins -- and her husband, Joeseph W. Perkins Jr.

"White Shoes"

Joe-Baby finally got a pair of shoes.
He needed 'em --
Bad.
Poor little fella,
Sweet kid, and handsome.
Big smile, and all that;
But, 'til now -- no shoes.

Now, the shoes --
They're big, and white.
I mean really white;
Manly shoes,
Like the big-boys wear;
And very, very white.

Joe-Baby loves the shoes;
Can't keep his eyes off them.
When he takes those big steps --
"Goose-steps" --
He can see his feet, but not his toes.

He comes in.
All you see is smiling white teeth --
And shoes --
White shoes.

Joe-Baby understands:
"Things are different now.
I'm gettin' to be a man-boy."

Joe-Baby loves it;
And so do we.
