A Christmas gift for "Win" Perkins (age 11), and for John "Norton" Perkins (age 8) -- (the children of our daughter, Amy).

The gift for each grandson was a copy of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.... each with the following inscription from us:

Christmas 2001

For: John "Norton" Perkins &emdash; this dictionary is a Christmas present from your grandparents.... John and Phyllis Todd.

We expect you to familiarize yourself with ALL the words in this book &emdash; including the orthography, orthoepy, and etymology of each word. We'll allow you a couple of weeks to achieve this monumental task.

You must learn syllabication of each word &emdash; in order to master linguistics, and the appropriate and facile usage of words.

The use of sesquipedalian terminology is a quintessential manifestation and reflection of one's intellect, and his motivation for success. You do not want simply to be verbose, loquacious, garrulous, or multiloquent. Sophistication in composition and in elocution is critically important.... indeed mandatory.

So, get busy. We'll be testing your skill, frequently.

Lovya, "Norton"....

Pop and Miss -- Lexicologists

John... there are a few words that you will not find in this dictionary. These are words that "developed" in our family, years ago, when your Mama and her siblings were very young. Ask your Mama about these words: Loola-Magoola; Whickengrookus; bomma; stunkie; chafodda; krissy-koff; jooby-jooby; and, of course the dreaded ailment which afflicted all Todd children, occasionally:
acute-homogamus-osteomyelogamy.

Christmas 2001
A note included with a Christmas gift for our son John.
The gift was a book, "The Story of Philosophy", by Will Durant

For: John Norton Todd IV
From Phyllis J. Todd, and John Norton Todd III

John.... your mother and father want you to be a "philosopher".... hence one of our reasons for giving you this marvelous book. A "philosopher", as indicated in the etymology of the word, is one who "loves knowledge".

Beyond that simple definition, "philosophy" -- as you obviously know -- is also a study of, and a search for, " the truth".... "ultimate reality". Clearly, we humans cannot yet understand "ultimate" truth.... but energetic and inquisitive minds cannot avoid this fascinating quest.

John, earlier in my life, I became aware of this book, Will Durant's "The Story of Philosophy". I found the book to be most helpful in my early pursuit of metaphysics.... and in my later intense interest in "religion", "church", and spiritual matters.

My supposition is that I was "destined" (to use a secular term) to be drawn to "philosophy" and "religion".

Interestingly, my father -- your grandfather -- John N. Todd Jr. -- was truly a bright and sensitive "philosopher". He frequently referred to his philosophic and spiritual conclusions as "Toddalism". He greatly wanted to document-in-writing his decipherings.... but he found himself inept in English composition (and "word-processors" were not available in his day). Therefore, much to my sorrow, we have no documentation of "Grand's" ideas.

I feel that my interest in writing about "spiritual" matters (as on my website) is a direct result from what I heard and learned not only from my father, but also from my mother. I shall never minimize the great impact that my mother's deep religious feelings and understanding and "faith" had in molding me into what the Creator had already ordained.

So, here's the book. Have at it!. Take your time, and absorb it.... then extrapolate into your own ongoing cerebral wonderings.

12/25/01

A Christmas gift for "Zeke"....
our son John's loyal canine friend.

(The gift is a picture: "Bad dog.... Be nice, or be bitten")

The following note was included with Zeke's Christmas gift:

Zeke.... your duty, in this life, is to follow and serve your master. Your master will guide you and teach you, and help you to perform that which he has assigned to you. (Your master has a specific plan for you.... you only -- and nothing can thwart that which he has "ordained".)

If you are reluctant in your assigned responsibilities, or if you deviate from that which your master has outlined for you.... you may be disciplined, or lovingly punished by your master. Later, you will become aware of an explanation.... a "reason" for it all.

For now, it remains simply "a dog's life". When the time comes, in your existence.... it will make sense.

Signed.... John Todd III

Your "Grandmaster"

From "The Mysteries of God". Click for the entire "tablet", in Easy-Print format.

The "Kingdom of Heaven" (see chapter on The Kingdom of God) is not attainable by human "choice". We humans cannot "work" or "will" our way into "Heaven". We mortals do not "write our own ticket", and "choose God".... whenever we may flippantly deign to "make up our mind". The "will of God" is not something that we humans mull over, and then "make a decision" to accept, or reject. No, the "will of God" is a determination that God has already mandated.... and cannot be thwarted by human beings.

Isn't it absurd to consider that the "will of God" is impotently proffered to earthly creatures, by God -- the Designer and Creator of the Universe -- as an "option", for us worldly human-animals to accept -- or refuse.

11/2/01

A JNT personal thought:

LORD --
It ain't easy bein' a HUMAN !

10/27/01
From "God's Spiritual NATION". Click for the entire "tablet", in Easy-Print format.

God selects the inhabitants of His "Holy Nation". Those who are allowed "admission" to God's "Nation", enter at a time and place determined by God -- unaffected by the wishes and opinions of human-beings -- unaltered by an individual's self-appraisal -- and uninfluenced by "religious" ("church") choices and preferences that we humans may have concocted and claimed for ourselves.

The earthly geographical location, and the racial origin of the inhabitants of God's spiritual "nation", do not matter -- at all. "Membership" in a specific doctrinal organization does not open the gate to this "nation". Humanly will and effort do not bring about admission into God's "Spiritual Nation".

10/23/01 -
From "
The Faith OF Jesus". Click the link for the entire tablet, in Easy-Print format.

It is most important to remember, and to emphasize the obvious.... that we who claim to be Christian "Godspeople" do not serve and worship two God's -- two "deities". There is but one Creator -- one God.... not a "God-God", plus a separate "Jesus-God". (See Jesus is God; God is Jesus.) Therefore, it becomes apparent that the "beliefs" OF Jesus ARE the "beliefs" of God -- the "Gospel" of God.... the "good news" from God -- taught by, and manifested through God-Incarnate.

Remember, too.... there is only one "gospel" -- not a gospel from Jesus, and another man-made gospel about Jesus.... and then a separate "Gospel of God" (link). Jesus "preached" and "proclaimed" THE Gospel of God -- so I am satisfied that the "Gospel of God" IS the one real "Gospel".

Yes, there is only the "Gospel of God" -- the "gospel" that was revealed to Jesus, and through Jesus --by God.... and explained and exemplified by Jesus.... and then extrapolated by Paul, and others -- and portrayed to us as the "Faith OF Jesus".

10/16/01 From A Secret God (link). (CLICK for the entire "tablet" in Easy-Print format.)

Surely it is now well-recognized and acknowledged that spiritual growth and development and understanding and "faith" are lifelong evolving quests -- under the auspices and direction of the Creator-God -- for each of God's accepted individuals. "Faith" progressively materializes within God's people (link) as each of us follows the "stepping-stones" which God places before us.

By following these stepping-stones as they "appear" -- laid-out by God, and assigned by God for each individual Godsperson -- we are directed, througout a lifetime, to fulfill our particular and distinctive "mission".... in order to reach the presence of the "secret God" that is being revealed to us -- the God who cannot be shaped and restricted by doctrinal formulations.... the God who cannot be encapsulated.... the God who cannot be attained by recitation of a creed.... the God who cannot be deceived by human machinations and concoctions.

10/14/01
A paragraph from "
God's People". Click for the entire "tablet", in Easy-Print format.

Is it your belief that God-Almighty is "just waiting" to see which "church" my frail human-brain tells me to "join" -- before He decides whether or not to include me with "God's people"? Does it matter, to God, which doctrinal variation I "accept"? Does God accept "Catholics", in preference to Baptists.... or Jews in preference to Muslims? Does God exclude from God's people all of us mortals whose parents and teachers and preachers have led us to a "wrong decision"? Is it your belief that God excludes me from God's people -- simply because I do not accept your "religion"..... and because I do not "join" your church?

Do you think that the God-of-All-Creation wants me to be cursed, imprisoned, tortured, or bombed if I do not claim to "accept" the rigid doctrine (link) of your "religion"?

A paragraph from the "tablet" What do you POSSESS that was not GIVEN to you? Click for the entire "tablet", in Easy-Print format.

Everything about you and me was given to us -- by God. We did not create ourselves. We did not select our parents. We had nothing to do with the "genes" we received. You and I did not choose the color of our skin, nor our "race", nor the nation in which we were born. We had nothing to do with our physical size, and our "shape".... nor our general appearance; nor our facial features. We did not devise our own personalities. We had no part in generating our intellect -- our "I.Q.". You and I had absolutely nothing to do with how quickly we learn; and we had no part in "designing" our special gifts and talents. All of our individual "attributes" were given to us by our Creator.... for His own reasons -- and for His plan.... for each of us.

Individuation by God"; linked.)

A paragraph from the chapter "Chosen by God" (linked).... from the Internet book "The Doctor's Terrific Tablets"

If God does not "choose" (accept; approve; claim; "save") His own "people" -- His own "children".... then who does "select" those who are to be accepted by God -- and included in God's Kingdom? Does a church or a preacher or a congregation "choose".... for God? Do we humans "choose" ourselves, and thereby declare ourselves to be "worthy" and acceptable to God? Does the recitation of a creed, or "baptism", or a "profession of faith", or joining a certain doctrinal church.... cause us to become "chosen", by God? What is your answer?

Here is the Biblical answer: "It is all God's doing." And, "If God is for us, who can be against us?"

The Blind Men and the Elephant
A poem by John G. Saxe

There were six men of Indostan --
To learning much inclined....
That went to see the elephant,
Though all of them were BLIND --
That each by observation
Might satisfy his mind.

The first approached the elephant,
And happening to fall
Against his broad and sturdy side,
At once began to bawl,
"God bless me.... but the elephant
Is very like a
wall."

Summarizing.... the second blind man felt of a tusk, and compared the elephant to a "spear".
The third man felt the trunk, and perceived that the elephant "is very like a
snake".
The fourth blind man "felt about the knee", and concluded that "the elephant is very like a
tree".
The fifth blind man felt the elephant's ear, and compared the elephant to a "
fan".
The sixth man "seized on the swinging tail"; and concluded that "the elephant is very like a rope".

And so these men of Indostan
Disputed loud and long;
Each in his own opinion....
Exceeding stiff and strong....
Though each was partly in the right --
And all were in the wrong !

So.... oft in
theologic wars,
The disputants, I ween,
Rail on in utter ignorance
Of what each other mean....
and prate about an elephant
Not one of them has seen.
