All cognizant "thinkers", philosophers, theologians -- and most of us "ordinary" people -- have searched for "answers" to our personal "religious" (spiritual) questions concerning "life", and death, and ultimate reality...... and God's Truth (link). Each of us has learned to rely on certain "sources" of trustworthy information (our own personally-accepted "Gold-Standard") -- from either our parents, our associates, the schools, our professors, our "churches", our preachers -- or from "scholars" and religionists of old -- or from certain books, manuscripts, and histories....... or from a variety of other "sources".

During my years of existence (which began in 1928), I have searched in a myriad of places; and I have spoken to thousands of people; and I have listened to many ministers, and "religious" pundits -- and I have read innumerable books, including many that were written by or about the great and famous "philosophical" and "religious" minds.

I have always come back to "The Bible" -- both the New Testament, and the Old Testament.
I consider the Bible to be one book -- in two "parts".... both parts DICTATED BY GOD -- through the minds and hands of God's selected human-beings. I accept the Bible to be God's description of Himself; and God's revelation of how He deals with His people (see link, God's People.)

( See link:
ENEMIES of God; and ENEMIES of God's people;
and see link The Ungodly.)

Obviously, it is not necessary for me to "defend" the Bible. History itself has proven the validity and enduring pertinence of what God says about Himself. All genuine students of the Bible soon discover that the Bible contains a fascinating admixture of easily understood, unambiguous, clear-cut statements -- along with a plethora of "mysterious" and metaphoric statements that are difficult (sometimes seemingly impossible) to decipher. To me -- the "difficult" parts do not detract from the beauty and truth of the more obvious statements and "revelations" of the Bible.

My personal conclusion concerning the Bible is that I accept the "truth" about the Bible, and the truth in the Bible. I have never found a better "Gold-Standard" -- for me. Obviously, I do not "understand" everything that I read in the Bible. The more I read and contemplate, however -- the more I "perceive" from the Bible. (That, I believe, is the experience of all who "stick-with" the study of the Bible.)

Yes, I accept and believe what the Bible says. I do not accept and believe what the Bible DOES NOT say.... and I do not (necessarily) accept and believe what you and your "church" CLAIM the Bible to say.

So, what is your "Gold Standard" of spiritual truth? Maybe you don't have a "source-book" that you believe, and accept. If you do not have a source of your "faith" (your beliefs), maybe you have concluded that you will invent your own "god" -- a designer-god that satisfies you, and your notions. Perhaps you are satisfied to be a child of Father Big-Bang, and Mother Nature, and the grandson of Father-Time.... in creational chaos.

If you are an atheist, you may be satisfied to believe that everything is nothing.

What one believes (I would say) is what one has been led -- by God -- to believe. As for me, I am pleased and comforted to have been "allowed" to understand the "truth" that I "sense" in God's Bible -- and I am delighted that I have not been abandoned to believe-in "ethics" and "morality" -- or in home-made "religion".... or in nothing.

A Secret God.

Similarly, I am pleased not to feel that I must "accept" someone else's opinion of the meanng and interpretation of the Bible. As I have said in other "tablets" of this book, I consider spiritual maturation to be a lifelong process, for each individual Godsperson.... a process which is under the day-by-day oversight and
guidance (link) of our Creator.

I must say, also, that even though I personally accept and believe the validity and the truth of my "Gold Standard" -- the Bible of God.... I feel no urge or "compulsion" to attempt to persuade anyone to "accept" that which I consider to be "the truth". As I have stated elsewhere in this book, revelations of spiritual truth are God's business. God awakens and accepts whomever He chooses (link,
Chosen by God).... and whenever He chooses. God may "use" His people for His purposes -- but He does not "need" man-made assistance. )

So.... what is your "Gold Standard"? Let me know..... it'll be fun for me to compare my "Book", with yours.

I say that the Bible is either from God.... dictated by God through the hands of His selected individuals..... OR, the Bible is simply an antiquated "history-book", with certain rules and regulations and advice for those who have been superstitiously duped into "believing". What do you say? What is your feeling about the Bible?

2 Peter 1: 20 (NASB) But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will.... but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Joshua 1: 8 (NRSV) This book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth. You shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous; and then you shall be successful.

Matthew 5: 17 (NRSV) Jesus speaking: Think not that I am come to destroy the Law, or the prophets.  I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the Law, till all be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments; and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

FORGETTING GOD

The following was copied from a clipping that I saved, when I was in medical school, in the 1950's. The author is shown simply as "Trench".

"No man can be without his god. If he have not the true God to bless and sustain him, he will have some false god to delude him, and to betray him. The Psalmist knew this, and therefore he enjoined so closely our forgetting the name of our God..... and holding up our hands to some strange god.

For every man has something in which he hopes, on which he leans, to which he retreats and retires, with which he fills up his thoughts in empty spaces of time -- when he is alone -- when he lies sleepless on his bed -- when he is not present with other thoughts.... to which he betakes himself in sorrow or trouble, as that from which he shall draw comfort and strength -- his fortress, his citadel, his defense -- and has not this "good" a right to be called his "god"?

Man was made to lean-on the Creator; but if not on Him, then he leans on the "creature".... in one shape or another. The ivy cannot grow alone; it must twine round some support or other -- if not the goodly oak, then the ragged thorn -- round any dead stick whatever, rather than have no stay or support, at all.

It is even so with the heart and affections of man -- if they do not twine round God, they must twine around some meaner thing."

The "Cornerstone Full-Gospel Baptist Church", in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, includes the following recitation, during the church service, "in unison",.... indicating their devotion to, and belief in, The Bible:
"This is my Bible. It is the Word of God. I believe in it, because it is true. It is the source of my faith, and is life to me. Because of this Bible, my life is better; and my strength to endure is sure. It is God's Word for God's people. It is the lamp to my feet, and the light to my path. I believe it."
