The following "tablet" was written by the author of this website, in response to a letter-to-the-editor of a Tuscaloosa, Alabama newspaper. Minor changes have been made for this Internet version.

A recent letter-to-the-editor of the Tuscaloosa News stated that "God cannot be proved"; and that "God has never been observed, experimented upon, nor verified". Then, in his letter, the author (a Mr. Hatley) asked a rhetorical question, "Who is lying; science or religion?"

I would like to state, comparably -- as others have said -- that no one can "prove" that God does not exist. Who has been able to "prove" that God is not the source and designer of "science".... or that God is not the originator of all the "scientific" miracles that we humans are allowed to experience and utilize, day by day?

And, even more important.... there is no one who can prove the "scientific" supposition that a spontaneous "creation" of somethingness out of nothingness occurred, billions of years ago... following an unexplained "big-bang" explosion somewhere out in the cold and dark and empty depths of nowhere.

Mr. Hatley has his "beliefs" and interpretation; and I have mine.

As for me, I accept and believe that an Almighty Creator God obviously exists. I see the evidence of God all around me, every day. I see countless miracles from God's plan and intention.... graciously revealed, and given to the world. Just consider the "scientific" miracles that all of us earthlings enjoy, such as radio and television.... and the inexhaustible flow of electrons, that we call "electricity". What about silicone "chips", magically infused (by God) with innate "piezo currents" and intrinsic oscillations.... "chips" that now are involved with every conceivable computer function. And, don't forget the miracle-magic of "The Internet".... with all of its ramifications.

Did "Big-Bang", Mother Nature, and Father-Time get together to plan and design these ingenious "natural" marvels?

Remember, also, earlier "miracles" from God, that human-beings have been allowed to discover, or invent, and use.... such as the printing press, and the steam engine. And consider internal combustion engines that utilize "fossil-fuels".... "fuels" that were scientifically-and-miraculously "implanted" (figuratively) in the ground, millions of years ago... just waiting for "man" to discover, and utilize.... on the schedule planned by our Creator. (Where would our world be, now, if we did not have "oil".... and its various derivatives?)

During my 32 years in the practice of internal medicine, I personally witnessed numerous miracles of "healing". I honestly feel that those therapeutic triumphs, which defied "medical" explanation, were ordained personally, by God, for a particular individual. A wise physician once wrote, "I treated him; God healed him." That is my belief, too.

Now.... you who read this.... make your own list of obvious miracles from God -- miracles that prove to you the "existence" of God.... especially those personal miracles that you, yourself, have felt and experienced, in your own life.

Think also about the miracle of "life". Did dumb and senseless atoms and molecules, organized by Mother-Nature, spontaneously generate "life", and living creatures? Did "Cousin-Chaos" and Chance and Luck produce our human minds.... imbued with cognizant thoughts, and memory, and heavenly feelings of love and caring and sharing.... and the recognition of God?

Nope.... it was not Mother-Nature, nor Father-Time, nor Big-bang.... who initiated the evolving creation that we
God's-people (link) now recognize and study and appreciate. It was God Himself, a few thousand years ago, who said, "Let there be light".... and it was at that very moment that some human-animals were enlightened by God, and separated from other beasts.... and allowed to begin to think, and to plan and calculate and write, and to tolerate each other.... and then to "see" and "hear" and recognize and worship our God. It was then, upon God's command, that selected human-beings "evolved" from darkness to light (link) .... and to awareness of God?

As for me, Mr. Hatley, I hear the voice of God, when I read the magnificent spiritual truths in
the Bible (link).... in the messages that were compiled and dictated by God, many years ago.... and then documented through the hands and hearts and minds of God's selected writers.

I also "feel" the presence of God.... the
Spirit of God (link).... when I perceive the heartfelt warmth of caring and cordial and loving human-beings; and when I see sweethearts together, and friends consoling each other; and when I witness the sweet and innocent and trusting faces of little children.

And, yes, unashamedly, I sense the "proof" of the existence of God.... when I experience the warm and wise and cuddly and genuine God-given LOVE of our own dear companion "dog".... "Pearl".... a three-year-old female Sheltie, whom we refer to, not as a "dog".... but as a "canine creation". (May we lovingly and smilingly and hopefully refer to "canino-theosis".... the "indwelling", by God, of our treasured canine cohorts?)

Now, review and consider the following truths.... from The Book dictated by God:

1 Corinthians 2: 12 (NRSV) Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God -- so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. 13 And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom.... but taught by the Spirit.... interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual. 14 Those who are unspiritual do NOT receive the GIFTS of God's Spirit.... for they are foolishness to them.... and they are unable to understand them.... because they are spiritually discerned.

The "proof" of God's existence, or non-existence, does not depend upon the "acceptance" or belief of any human-being, or any specific church-of-humans. God does not come into existence because of your beliefs or mine; and neither does God "disappear", or become ineffective or non-existent because of anyone's unbelief.

So, evidently Mr. Hatley and I have been "hearing" different voices. Each of us has "faith" in what seems to be an "unprovable truth". The evidence that I "sense" and "see" and "hear" proves to me that there is an omnipotent, personal God who knows and cares about His people.

It's like God-Incarnate said (John 10: 26): "My sheep hear my voice. I know them; and they follow me. You do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep."

I'll take my chances by relying upon a personal "believable" God.... who, hopefully, has included me among
His sheep (link).
