Todd, in response to a lead-editorial in the Tuscaloosa (Alabama) News, in June 2003. There are several additions, wording changes, and formatting alterations.... in this Internet version. The Tuscaloosa News lead editorial, on 6/4/03, was headlined in this way: "ELDERLY must beware of FINANCIAL HAWKS". My husband and I appreciate the News' solicitude.... on behalf of us aging citizens, who are trying to get-by on our retirement income. When I read this Tuscaloosa News editorial, I could not help thinking about Alabama's WILY governor, and his recently proposed extreme TAX-increases. (According to the dictionary, "WILY" means TRICKY.... and SCHEMING.) The News' editorial about "financial hawks", begins with a very appropriate warning about "scam artists, preying on the elderly".... certainly a serious financial consideration for old and young alike.... especially now, for the productive tax-paying citizens of Alabama. The Tuscaloosa News editorial advised us old-people to be "suspicious of anyone from the government offering to provide any type of unsolicited assistance". The editorial also warned us about any pretender who portrayed himself as a "helpful person.... offering to help you." The News' editorial said, these "helpful persons -- wearing dark clothing, and driving a dark car -- gain the confidence of their victims.... and then STEAL their wallets." Very appropriately stated !! Again, my husband and I were reminded of the Wily-One.... Alabama's GOVERNOR, who is threatening to confiscate an even larger portion of our lifelong savings, our homes, our cars, our "intangible" possessions, and our investments. Just think.... at a time of national and international recession, when there is high unemployment, worldwide; and when a dreadful decline in America's stock-market has cost many savers and investors a great part of their life's nest-egg; and when almost everyone (especially in financially-poor Alabama) has less income than before; and when our federal government is making every conceivable effort to reduce taxes, in order to get spendable money back into the hands of all the people.... here comes our Governor Wily, demanding more tax-money from us Alabamians. This fact remains.... Alabama's politicians do not ever have any solution.... for any problem.... except to extract more tax-money from those citizens who already pay most of the State's bills. We voters must not give the Montgomery-politicians more money to waste.... and we especially do not want to "un-earmark" Alabama's tax-revenues for the so-caled "Alabama Excellence Initiative" (more than 500 million dollars, every year). "Un-earmarking" this huge amount of our taxes would allow our WILY Governor and his friendly "legislator-cohorts" to spend our money.... in whatever-way they can dream-up! The Tuscaloosa News' editorial also advised that we old-people should, "Keep purses and wallets, checkbooks, and other valuables out of sight." Especially out of Governor Wily-Wun's sight.... I hasten to add ! ! Many of us in the over-the-hill-gang have worked for a lifetime.... saving for a personal rainy-day; and "skimping"; and staying out of debt.... just waiting and hoping to get to a point in our lives when we could "retire".... and then gradually spend the fruits of our 40 or 50 years of labor and delayed gratification. But now, our governor has come out of his "conservative" disguise, and has MORPHED into a "financial hawk"; and he is circling around us Alabamians.... along with his legislative chickens (I will not call them vultures).... threatening to attack us, and our assets.... and our peace-of-mind. The-Wily-Wun has openly stated, "We don't have a choice". We've gotta stick-it to the employed and retired "wealthy" citizens... that "rich" 35% of Alabama's productive adult population.... so that the remaining 65% of the population can have an easier life.... and pay even less tax. (This is the same-ole "class-warfare" political trick.... wage war on the working "wealthy". So -- here go WILY'S minions.... trudging from place to place, trying to "SELL" Wily's tax increases to various DEPENDENT individuals and groups.... by telling them: "You'll be voting to increase somebody else's TAX.... but NOT your own".) Yep, we're seeing it already.... those who will be paying little-or-no tax increase, are being "courted" by the WILY-ONE'S TRUDGERS to vote for the WILY-TAX. In addition, many others under "control" by the State.... public-school teachers; AEA members and their supporters; over-aged public-school students; State employees; college teachers and their subordinates; "senior citizens"; and others -- will soon be ORDERED or ENTICED or THREATENED or SCARED to the polls.... and some will be BUSED to the polls.... to vote to increase YOUR tax.... so that your hard-earned assets can be "re-distributed".... to THEM. My husband and I do NOT want to pay more tax to "fund" programs and projects that "distribute" more of our savings and investments to those who simply claim to be poor and helpless and uneducated and unemployed. We taxpayers are already paying enough.... as much as $30,000 a year to a "single-mom" with two (or more) children.... to fund "programs" such as S.S.I. (Supplemental Security Income; also known as "dummy-dollars"); AFDC (aid for dependent children); food stamps (free food); Medicaid (free health-insurance): unemployment compensation; "Childcare" (free nursery); E.I.T.C. ("earned-income tax credit", from the federal government); "Section 8" (free rental subsidy of $625 per month); free meals, and free books at school; free transportation to and from school.... and on and on. Furthermore.... my husband and I sure don't want to start paying for WILY's Plan of FREE college tuition for 15,000 students.... every year.... forever. We just do not want to donate our savings.... to pay for someone else's children to attend college. I hope that Alabama's voters understand that many young-and-old citizens PAY RENT for the house or apartment they live in. Here's advice for RENTERS.... please be WARNED: if you rent your house or your apartment.... your rent will be going-up.... on the day after Governor Wily's tax-extraction referendum, in September.... IF we voters ALLOW our WILY Governor and his eager-legislator-buddies to confiscate more of our assets. (Your landlord will simply add his increased property-tax, to the rent you pay.) The Wily-Hawk has declared that we Alabamians must realize, "Alabama is in a crisis." Yep, you're right, Governor.... a crisis of leadership. It seems that Alabama is always in some type of "crisis", according to our Montgomery politicians. Every day is a "rainy-day".... always requiring more "funding" for something.... more tax.... from the productive citizens.) We "senior citizens" have now been told that we should put our "trust" in our gubernatorial turn-coat, who turned-out to be, NOT the Republican we voted into office.... but a tax-and-spend liberal, in a tax-hawk's feathers. Now, who can predict what Wily MUTATION will be next.... and what new funding facade will appear from our deceptive "leader". And.... speaking of "trust".... just try to remember what has begun to happen, recently, to Alabama's large and lucrative "Oil and Gas TRUST Fund".... now being "tapped" by Governor Wily, for a current "rainy-day" in education funding . (Also, since Siegelman's "Amendment One", of two years ago.... a portion of "capital appreciation" in the Trust-Fund's principal-value, can now be extracted from the "Trust", for State expenditures.) So.... just "wait 'til next year". Try to guess where the Wily-Hawk will expect rainy-day money to come from.... for Alabama's next "crisis". TAX-PAYERS, watch out. The "TAX HAWKS", and other Montgomery birds-of-prey.... are circling, sniffing, and swooping. Remember the "foot-in-the-door-principle". Think also about "floodgates". If we taxpayers VOTE to allow this additional TAX-RAID on our personal assets, in the up-coming September 2003 referendum.... we will DESERVE what we get.... and we will NEVER get over it. Remember.... a constitutional change is FOREVER ! ! Remember... any new tax is likely to be FOREVER ! ! Remember... TAX-increases typically increase and increase... year after year. Remember.... Your new tax increases will NOT be for just one year.... your tax increases will be for every year.... from now on!! And, later, as you age, and as your income increases, and as you move into a larger and nicer house, and as you house is "re-valued" upward every year.... YOUR taxes will continue to RISE.... year after year. Now, recently, here comes another of the Wily-One's ploys. "Wily" has now donned his "Veil of Sanctimony"; and is urging his "believers" to honor their "religious" beliefs, and to vote to "donate" more money.... not to their own church, for God's work.... but to the State of Alabama.... for our beloved governor and his Montgomery "disciples" to spend.... at their "discretion". Can you believe it? Are you kidding me? Furthermore, WILY is even attempting to shame and convert us "un-believers" (us "sinners", who don't want to keep paying more and more tax) to blindly accept his "religion" of higher taxes. (No mention of "separation of church and state" has been included in Wily's churchy-plea for more money for Montgomery.) TAXPAYERS.... ANSWER this: how much is "enough" -- for Alabama's political tax-extractors? Do you think the politicians will continue to demand MORE and MORE? Susan Hamil, the well-known boisterous teacher in a Tuscaloosa law-school, has already openly declared that Wily's tax-increase proposals are just the beginning.... "the FIRST STEP", she says. To the Tuscaloosa News... our governor, the WILY-WUN, is one of Alabama's true "financial-hawks", that your editorial described.... but failed to fully identify.... by name. There are several other lurking "educators" and legislators, in Montgomery, that you should expose.... for the sake of ALL Alabamians. Please keep trying to save and protect us elderly ones.... from those who, as you said, would steal our "cash AND our wallets". And.... help ALL of us Alabamians to become more informed about this unpredictable "WILY-Factor". 12/3/05 |
