Habakkuk 2: 1-3 (NEB): I will stand at my post. I will take up my position on the watch-tower. I will watch to learn what He will say THROUGH ME -- and what I shall reply when I am challenged. 2 Then the Lord made answer: "Write down the VISION..... INSCRIBE it on TABLETS.... made for a herald to carry with speed. For there is still a VISION for the appointed time. At the DESTINED hour, it will come in breathless haste. IT WILL NOT FAIL. If it delays -- WAIT for it.... for when it comes will be NO TIME to linger."

I have no interest in attempting to persuade anyone to "believe" as I believe. I am not generating this website on behalf of any sectarian group, or denomination. I am a physician.... not a preacher, priest, rabbi, or imam. I make no claim to have achieved special spiritual knowledge, or insight....and I have no illusions about having "all the answers"; or about having deciphered the "mind of God".

My basic purpose in "documenting" my personal spiritual understanding (acquired and developed throughout a lifetime) is simply to express myself -- for my own "reflection", and satisfaction -- and to share my thoughts and "conclusions" with those individuals who have been "given" to me.... and with those who are now a part of my existence.... as time and life inexorably progress.

I never "argue" or debate "religious" (spiritual) issues.

Over a period of many years .... dating back to before my college-days.... I have frequently raised questions, within myself, about certain "churchy" terms that I have heard over-and-over, in various churches, of differing denominations. For example, early in my religious "listening", I often heard mention of religious concepts such as
the Gospel (link); and the Kingdom of God (link); the chosen (link); The Trinity (link); salvation (link); SIN (link); THE Church (link); sovereignty (link); Christian (link); judgement (link).... and on-and on. (See link: Author's Creed Index.) I frequently heard conflicting usages and "definitions" of these numerous "religious" terms. So, gradually, I embarked upon a lifelong personal study and search for further understanding of these very, very important spiritual concepts.... for my own edification and gratification.

My purpose was, and is, to satisfy "me".... about these confusional "preachy" terms (still widely used and obfuscated in various pulpits).... rather than to rely solely on one-or-the-other of the world's innumerable "religions" to dictate to me the "conclusions" which others have adamantly decided to be "the truth".... "the one way".... the "only" way. (See link
Rigid Doctrinism.)

My spiritual searching, and my lifelong ongoing studies, and my personal contemplation, and my prayers.... led me to a degree of "spiritual" satisfaction, which I decided to record, as an unpublished "book".... "The Doctor's Terrific Tablets".

Then, with the advent of computers, and word-processors, and the Internet.... a quick-and-easy and inexpensive way for me to "publish" my personal discoveries and beliefs, became available. So.... in 1998, a few years after my retirement from the practice of Internal Medicine, I decided to share my thoughts and understanding with others.... emphasizing "to share"; not "to debate".... via the Internet. Thus, with the use of the incredible, God-given, and marvelous Internet,
I (like others) have had the luxury of being able to publish, "update", alter, edit, "doctor", supplement, and revise my thoughts.... easily and instantaneously.... at any time of the day or night.

Hence, this book.... my "on-going, online
Internet BOOK".

I must state again.... I have no interest in trying to "convince" anyone.... especially my own family and friends.... to agree-with or "accept" my personal "conclusions". I do hope that our Creator has led me in my studies, and in my "decipherings".... and in my written portrayal of what I consider to be "spiritually correct".

(A somewhat peripheral purpose in my writing all this, is to honor my parents -- who were dedicated and proper and loving human-beings who spent their lives helping to develop my brother (my only sibling), and me. It is interesting to recall that my father [John Norton Todd Jr. -- 1896 -1978] frequently mentioned his desire to compose and document his "philosophy", which he referred to as "Toddalism". He and my brother and I frequently had discussions about life, and "political" matters, and religion, and spiritual understanding. My father, unfortunately, was never able to fulfill his desire to document his thoughts.... for, in his day, there were no "word-processors", with easy revising and editing.... and so, this very intelligent-but-unschooled father found himself unable to express himself adequately, in written form. Perhaps, therefore, my developing this website will reflect at least a part of what my father "passed-on" to me. (See link,
Remembering "GRAND".)

(My well-educated mother [Alton Thomas Todd -- 1903 -1999] was a talented musician, in piano and organ. She taught piano; directed church-choirs; accompanied my father's professional singing; played the organ in a large Methodist church; gave highly-admired book-reviews; taught Sunday-school; professionally directed a "Youth Club" for underprivileged chlldren.... and served for several years as "Director of Religious Education" ("DRE") at the First Methodist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. She never attempted to instruct our family, "formally", in our religious beliefs and understanding.... although she routinely "trained" us, and guided us by example. She instructed our family with the following "motto", which she wrote in my "autograph book" when I was 10 years old: "Success ends, when ambition dies". And so, my mother ("Mama T", as she was known to her grandchildren) remains a source of great comfort and remembrance, for me. Her thoughts and actions became a profoundly important part of me.)

If there is still another motive in my writing about "religion" and "spiritual" matters, and about God-the-Creator.... that motive would be to expose -- and hopefully to lessen -- some of the almost-absurd denominational (doctrinal) squabbles, which hostilely separate loving-and-caring "Godspeople" from each other. (See link
-- God's people.) (And, see link: Doctrinal Rigidity.)

If anything I compose (or quote) in this website is beneficial to a reader who may be "searching" (as most of us humans are) for further spiritual understanding.... I am delighted to be able to share my thoughts, and my beliefs. A reader may copy or quote or print any part of this website, without restriction. As I state on the "FRONT PAGE" of this website, No rights are reserved (see link).

My feeling is that even when a reader disagrees with my spiritual understanding -- that reader will perhaps benefit by solidifying his personal "spiritual" position -- when his own ideas and "beliefs" are evoked, within himself, for "internal" reflection.... and "debate". In other words.... if any thesis I express is "antithetical" to the doctrine of a reader, perhaps that reader will be able to augment his own spiritual thinking, by contrasting his opinions with mine.

I prefer that a reader compose, and write, his own opinions.... for himself to save and read and "re-contemplate" -- and to share with others (including me).... rather than "critiquing" (or criticizing) my spiritual understanding, as documented in this "website".

If a reader communicates his written opinions to others -- then all of us will grow in our pursuit of
God's "TRUTH" (see link). (It disturbs me that some "church-goers" will never scrutinize or challenge or re-evaluate their own "beliefs", or their church's doctrinal "position"..... seemingly because of an almost "superstitious" dread that by spiritual "analyzing", they may be offending God, or "sinfully" questioning God.)

Naturally, I do hope that there are those who will read my compositions and "conclusions", as expressed on these pages -- but my purpose is not to proselytize, or to "build temples", or to argue rigid "religious" principles.

I believe that "church-building", and revelations of spiritual truth -- belong to God.

God may "use" you and me -- but He does not need our "prodding" -- nor our assistance.

(This tablet on "The Gospel" interrelates closely with the tablet, "The Faith OF Jesus" [linked].)

The "gospel".... the "good message" (or, as some translate it, "the good news"). What is "the gospel"? What are the messages that God intended to portray, through Jesus -- and throughout the Bible? Some "denominations" (and some translations of the Bible) have attempted to reserve the term "gospel" to refer to what they define as the "good news that Jesus died on the cross, for the redemption of the sins of mankind". I will not debate that point. But, surely there is much more than that in "The Gospel" -- which I consider to be the Biblical "good news" ABOUT God -- FROM God -- TO God's people.... in the words and "messages" that God Himself "spoke" throughout the entire Bible.... and which God revealed in the life and in the example and in the words of God-Incarnate.

Can it be argued that there is more than one "gospel"? Is there a "gospel" of God -- and a separate "gospel" designed and complexified by various doctrinal interpretations? The answer to that question: No ! There is but one gospel..... the "Gospel of God".

Any message that comes through Jesus -- from either the words of Jesus, or from the life, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus -- is from God! In other words, there is no difference between the Biblical "Gospel" about Jesus, and the "Gospel of God" which Jesus repeatedly proclaimed (as indicated in the numerous scriptural references, below).

(According to the Zondervan Pictorial Bible Dictionary (1967), "It was not until circa A. D. 150 that the word 'Gospel' was applied to the writings concerning the message of Christ." [Clearly, there was no written "gospel" during the time of Jesus' ministry on earth. Jesus never used the term "gospel" to refer to His own "ministry".] That is, it was long after the life, works, and words of Jesus -- and long after Paul's writings -- that those in "church" authority decided to revise the definition of the term "the gospel".)

To restrict the term "Gospel" to a denominational definition like: "The 'Gospel' is the 'good news' that God has provided a way of redemption through His Son, Jesus Christ" -- omits all the other "good news" from God, and about God, that Jesus brought in His message to the Jews and "Gentiles" of His time -- and to all subsequent "Godspeople" (God's people) (See link).

(It must also be remembered [obviously] that there is but one "God". God came to earth, "incarnate" in Jesus. Jesus is not another "god" -- a separate "deity" -- distinct from The One God. [See link: Jesus is God; God is Jesus.])

(Remember too, the "Spirit of God" is not an "essence" that is different and distinct from God. The Spirit of God is the "Holy Spirit" -- the "Spirit" that indwells each of God's people. [See link: "
God the Holy Spirit".] The "Spirit of God" that has existed throughout the ages is no different from the Holy Spirit that Jesus referred to as the Comforter, the Counselor, and the Advocate. So, any "good news" from Jesus, or from the Holy Spirit -- is from God. No churchy revisions, extrapolations, re-definitions and restrictions are necessary, or proper.)

So, now, see what the Lord Jesus Himself said about the "Gospel of the Kingdom of God", and about the "Gospel of God". Jesus does not ever state that He was sent to earth simply to proclaim the "gospel" of His own crucifixion and resurrection.

The "Gospel of God", and the "Gospel of the Kingdom of God" are proclaimed by God, through the spoken words of the Lord Jesus (God "incarnate" in man) -- and by innumerable splendid scriptural truths revealed in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. Note the references quoted below. Read these scriptures out loud, so that so you can "see" and "hear" what Jesus-God says:

Mark 1: 14 (KJV) Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the Kingdom of God, 15 And saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel."
Same (NEB) After John had been arrested, Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the Gospel of God: "The time has come; the Kingdom of God is upon you; repent, and believe the Gospel".

Same (RSV) ......Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the Gospel of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel."
Matthew 4: 23 (KJV) And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the Kingdom (same RSV and NEB), and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

Matthew 9: 35 (KJV) And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the Kingdom (same in RSV).

Luke 4: 43 (KJV and NASV) Jesus speaking: "I must preach the Kingdom of God -- for I was SENT for this purpose."

Same (Amplified) 43 Jesus speaking: I must preach the good news (the Gospel) of the Kingdom of God ...... for I was sent for this purpose.

Romans 1: 1 (KJV) Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God.

Romans 15: 16 (KJV) That I (Paul) should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles -- ministering the gospel of God.....

2 Corinthians 11: 7 (KJV) (Paul speaking) Have I committed an offence in abasing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the Gospel of God freely?

Matthew 24: 14 (NRSV) Jesus speaking: "And this gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world, as a testimony to all nations....."

Luke 16: 16 (NASV) Jesus speaking: "The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John (the Baptist). Since then, the gospel of the Kingdom of God is preached, and everyone in forcing his way into it. (Amplified Bible says: "Everyone strives to go into the Kingdom in his own way, rather than by God's way.")

Acts 20: 24 (KJV) But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

There is much more "good news"; and there are many more "good messages" throughout the "Gospel of God". The "good news" from God is found not only in the words and examples and miracles of God-Incarnate, but also in Paul's Biblical explanations and extrapolations of Jesus's messages -- and, of course, in the revelations of the other magnificent "books" of the "Old Testament" -- amd the "New Testament".

You, the reader, and I, and others, can make a long list of "good messages" from God, that come from and through the the Bible of God. In the paragraphs that follow, I will enumerate a few of my favorite "messages", from the "Gospel of God" -- the Gospel of the Kingdom of God -- and you can add others, for yourself, from your own thoughts, and memories, and revelations.

In the following list, I have made "links" to several "tablets" of this book. These links show numerous Biblical references on each subject.

1. Jesus, as quoted in the references above, said that He must preach the gospel of the Kingdom of God, for He was "sent for that purpose". (The "Kingdom of God" is the spiritual dwelling place of God, and His accepted people -- in this world, and in the life to come.) Now it may seem silly to say this, but in the "Kingdom of God", God is the King. He is in command. He makes the decisions. He does what He pleases, to satisfy His own plans. The Kingdom of God is not ruled by humans, or by rules and regulations and doctrinal "Law", or by a "church", or by the plans and machinations of any earthly group. The Sovereign God of the Universe is in charge of you and me; and He is the only One who decides about who is qualified and acceptable to "enter" the Kingdom of God. ("The Kingdom of God")

2. God chooses ("elects") those individuals who are to be included among His "children" -- His people. We humans may not understand it, or like it; but God has His own "selective process" -- not based on what we humans think or claim for ourselves; and not based on what a "church" or minister decides -- but based only on God's own choice. We humans do not choose God -- God does the choosing. ("Chosen by God")

3. God does not hold the sins ("misdeeds", "trespasses") of His accepted people against them. (See link "Sin -- What is Sin, and who decides?")

4. "Righteousness", in God's accepted individuals, is a gift from God, granted to (imputed to; ascribed to) God's people. "Righteousness", in God's eyes, is not something that we humans "do"; and righteousness is not related to deeds done ("works"), or to creeds recited, or to promises made. ("The Righteousness of God")

5. "Salvation is of the Lord". Salvation does not come from humans, or from the church, or from the pope, or from our own works, or from our "choices", or from our own "decision". ("Salvation is of the Lord")

6
. God's accepted ("chosen") individuals do not come under "judgment" (see link).

John 3: 18 (NASV) He who believes in Him (the Son) is not judged. He who does not believe has been judged already; because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten son of God.

Same (Amplified Bible) He who believes on Him...... is not judged (he who trusts in Him never comes up for judgement; for him there is no rejection, no condemnation; he incurs no damnation).

John 5: 24 (NIV) (Jesus speaking): Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word, and believes Him (God) who sent me, has eternal life; and does not come under judgment, but has passed from death to life.
7. God's people are born of the "Spirit"; and they are the children of God (See link); and they are brothers of Jesus.

John 3: 3 (NRSV) Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the Kingdom of God without being born from above. 5 .... no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water, and Spirit. 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be born from above'."

John 1: 12 (NIV) Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God -- 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision, or a husband's will, but born of God.

Romans 8: 29 (NIV) For those God foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that He (Jesus) might be the firstborn among many BROTHERS.

Romans 8: 14 (NRSV) For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 16 .... it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ.

Hebrews 2: 10 (NEB) Both the One who makes men holy, and those who are made holy, are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them BROTHERS.

8. When an individual has been accepted by God, that "acceptance" is irrevocable.

Romans 11: 29 {NRSV} Paul speaking: "The gifts of God, and His calling, are irrevocable".

God does not change His mind, about His people. God's children do not have to "squirm", every day, hoping to please an angry and retributive God. The "good news", according to this scripture, is that God understands that we humans are indeed only human. God knows us for what we are. After all, He made us -- each of us -- just as He intended. We belong to God. We live for His pleasure, according to His plan, for each of us. He will not "save" us today, and then "revoke" our salvation tomorrow.

9. (A personal note: The "really good news" that Jesus explained, time and again, during His original days on Earth, is that God was not, and is not, owned and possessed by any religious group, or doctrine, or "church".

During Jesus's days in this world, He had a constant batttle with the then "religious" authorities (Scribes, Pharisees, chief priests, etc.). Those authorities claimed God to be the sole "property" of the Jews, to the exclusion of all who were not "born of Abraham", and to the exclusion of all who did not follow the prescribed Jewish religious traditions.

(My personal feeling is that Jesus functioned largely as a "reformer", serving to awaken God's people (see link) to understand that the "Kingdom of God" was not restricted to Jews only. Jesus wanted all of God's people, regardless of their earthly kinship and national origin, to know that all who are accepted by God are irrevocably and irresistibly included among God's children ("God's people") in God's "Kingdom" -- irrespective of the assessment of any earthly humans, and regardless of the opinion of any religious church-group.)

10. God has "enemies"; and the enemies of God's people are enemies of God (see link, Enemies of God, and enemies of God's people).

11. "Vengeance" and retribution and revenge are God's business. God "retaliates" against those who harm His people; and God "repays" those who do not satisfy Him.

Hebrews 10: 30 (KJV) For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me. I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge His people.

Deuteronomy 32: 35 (KJV) To me belongeth vengeance, and recompense. Their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand -- and the things that shall come upon them make haste. 36 For the LORD shall judge His people, and repent Himself for His servants, when He seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left. (NRSV, verse 36: Indeed the LORD will vindicate His people, and have compassion on His servants, when He sees that their power is gone -- neither bond nor free remaining.) 37 And He shall say, Where are their gods -- their rock in whom they trusted, 38 Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise up, and help you; and be your protection. 39 See now that I am He, and there is no god with me. I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal -- neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand. 40 For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever. 41 If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment..... I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me.

12 The "Holy Spirit" is God..... God the Holy Spirit. (See numerous Biblical references on this point, in the link: The Spirit of God). There are not two "Holy Spirits"..... a "Holy Ghost" of the resurrected Messiah..... plus, another Spirit, the "Holy Spirit of God". See the Biblical references shown in the above-link to the "Spirit of God".

My understanding is that the effects of God, and the works of God, and the indwelling power of God, and the bestowing of the "gifts" of God, are all of the SAME "origin"..... the same "cause".... the same "source" -- whether one refers to this "source" as "God", or "Lord", or "Lord God", or "Lord Jesus", or "Jesus", or "Christ", or "Christ Jesus", or "Savior", or "Messiah", or "Spirit of God", or "Holy Spirit of God", or "Comforter", or "Advocate", or "Holy Spirit", or "Holy Ghost", or "Spirit of Truth".

13. There are many other "good messages" in the Gospel of God. I hope to "extrapolate" these, for myself, later. Meanwhile, I hope the reader will be considering what God says, in His Bible, concerning the following additional "gifts" of "good news" -- from God, for God's people.... including God's mercy; grace; guidance; protection; teaching; discipline; forgiveness; understanding -- and on and on.

And so, indeed, you and I could go "on and on" -- contemplating and remembering more and more "good news" that comes from God (the "Gospel of God"). However, it is sad-but-true -- in some denominational groups, the meaning of the "Gospel" has become restricted, and limited to a few "churchy" phrases about the life and death of Jesus. Nevertheless..... the real Gospel of God -- the "good messages" from God -- through Jesus, and through Paul, and through the written words of our Bible -- are virtually innumerable. And, they are fascinating, and exciting and exhilarating -- to discover, and to consider, and to remember.

This is the end of my chapter on "The Gospel". I believe that these scriptural references establish my understanding that the Gospel of God, and the "Gospel of the Kingdom of God" -- are the real and true "good news" from God, and from God-Incarnate........ as portrayed in the Bible.

"Israelites"... by God's promise
(All of God's People Are "Israelites")

This chapter on "Israelites" relates closely with the tablet
"
God's People" (Linked in Quick-Print format)

Romans 2: 28 (NRSV) For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly -- nor is true circumcision something external and physical. Rather, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and real circumcision is a matter of the heart. It is SPIRITUAL..... and NOT LITERAL. (NIV says "not by the written code"). Such a person receives praise not from others.... but from God.

Galatians 3: 29 "If you belong to Christ, you are Abraham's offspring, and heirs, according to the promise."

Romans 3: 28 (NRSV) For we hold that a person is justified by faith, apart from WORKS prescribed by the Law. 29 Or, is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also.... since God is one; and He will justify the circumcised on the ground of faith, and the uncircumcised through that same faith. 31 Do we then overthrow the Law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the Law.

I want to begin this "tablet" by quoting (below) a portion of my personal "Creed Index", concerning my understanding and deep belief that even though I am not a Jew, I am an "Israelite". There will be several Biblical quotations, below.... following the short section of the "Creed Index". These Biblical references will "substantiate", I believe, that "God's people" (whether of "Old Testament" days, or later in "Christian" times) are considered, by God, to be "Israelites" -- and hence "heirs" and recipients of all the promises of God for His special people -- His CHOSEN ones (see link).

This understanding about "Israelites" is not my invention. There have always been other "believers" -- dating back to Paul, writing to the Romans and to the Galatians, as re-quoted below -- who have understood that the Old Testament scriptures which refer to "my people Israel", "my chosen", "my sheep", etc., are indeed references not simply to "geographical" and "national" and "genetic" Israelites ("Jews") of ancient Biblical historical times -- but also to those "spiritual Israelites", both historically and NOW, who have become "Israelites by God's promise". That is to say (as shown in the Biblical references below) there are, and have always been, those individuals who are "reckoned", by God's decision and choice, to be "Israelites" -- and hence God's own people.

From the author's Creed Index, Part II (linked):

I believe that I am an "Israelite";
Though I was not born a "Jew",
And though I am not genetically descended from Abraham,
And though I have never lived in Israel.

The Bible tells me that
It is not the natural-born descendants of Abraham
Who are considered to be the
CHILDREN of GOD (link),
But that it is the children of God's promise
Who are "reckoned" as descendants of Abraham (Israelites).
And, the Bible says:
"If you belong to Christ,
You are the issue of Abraham,
And so heirs (Israelites) by promise."
And -- Godsword also says:
"Israel is the people God claims as His own."

So I believe that if I am chosen by God,
Selected by God to be one of His own;
Then I belong to Christ;
And, thus, I am an "Israelite", by promise.

Therefore, because of this covenant,
The "Old Testament" promises of God,
To "God's people", the "Israelites".....
Are promises to me....
In the same way that the promises of the "New Testament"
From our God.... through God-Incarnate --
Are promises to me.

Consider now the following quotations from the Bible, concerning this same point. Read these scriptures out loud, so that you will be able to "hear" and "see" God's words:

ROMANS 9: 6-9 (NEB) "For not all descendants of Israel are truly Israel (Israelites); nor, because they are Abraham's offspring, are they all his true children; but, in the words of Scripture, 'Through the line of Isaac the descendants shall be traced'. That is to say, it is not those born in the course of nature who are children of God; it is the children born through God's promise who are RECKONED as Abraham's descendants" (or Israelites).

Same (NIV) In other words, it is not the natural children (natural-born, or genetic Israelites) who are God's children; but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring.

Same (NRSV) This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise who are counted as descendants (Israelites).

Galatians 3: 29 "If you belong to Christ, you are Abraham's offspring, and heirs, according to the promise."

Romans 2: 28 (NRSV) For a person is not a Jew (an Israelite) who is one outwardly -- nor is true circumcision something external and physical. Rather, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and real circumcision is a matter of the heart -- it is spiritual, and not literal. Such a person receives praise not from others, but from God.

Same (NIV) A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly; nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. 29 No, a man is a Jew (Israelite) if he is one inwardly -- and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God.

Same (NEB) The true Jew (an "Israelite") is he who is such inwardly; and true circumcision is of the heart, directed not by written precepts, but by the Spirit. Such a man receives his commendation not from men, but from God.
These quotations from Romans and from Galatians tell me that not every "descendant of Israel" is truly an "Israelite"; and that not every genetic Jew is automatically an "Israelite" (one of "God's people") simply because he is a Jew, or because he is a lineal descendant of Abraham. That is, these scriptures say that it is not those simply born of Jewish descent who are "Israelites", or God's children, or God's chosen people; but it is those who are "born of the promise" of God who are "reckoned" as God's own. This distinction was made by God, according to Romans 9: 11 (NIV) "In order that God's purpose of election (NEB: "God's selective purpose") might stand, based not upon men's deeds, but upon the call of God." (That is to say, an individual becomes one of God's people, a child of God -- an Israelite -- "based not" on anything that the individual decides or does for himself -- but upon the decision of God Himself.)

Now note the following additional Biblical references, affirming the same truth:

John 1: 11 (NIV) He (Jesus) came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him. 12 Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God -- 13 children born not of natural descent (not "genetic" Israelites), nor of human decision, or a husband's will -- but born of God.

Galatians 3: 6-9 (NRSV) "Just as Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness; so, you see, those who believe are the descendants of Abraham.

Same (NIV) Understand, then, that those who believe ARE children of Abraham. 9 So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

Romans 9: 24 (NIV) ..... even us, whom He also called, not only from the Jews, but also from the Gentiles? 25 As He says in Hosea: "I will call them 'my people' who are not my people ; and I will call her 'my loved one', who is not my loved one." (JNT note: that is, God will consider to be His people those who were not genetically born to be "my people" [Israelites]).

Jeremiah 51: 19 (NEB) Israel is the people He claims as His own. (JNT note: that is, "Israel" IS the people God claims -- and not simply a geographical "nation".)

Ephesians 3: (NIV) 4 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to men in other generations, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets. 6 This mystery is that through the gospel, the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel.... members together of ONE BODY -- and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Same (KJV) 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his (God's) holy apostles and prophets, by the Spirit; 6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of His (God's) promise in Christ by the gospel: 7 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God, given unto me by the effectual working of His power.

In the following reference, note the derivation and origin of the name "Israel". God assigned the name "Israel" to Jacob, after Jacob "struggled" with God. After "wrestling" with God, Jacob was forever changed; and he was "blessed" by God -- and accepted by God -- and his "life was spared":
Genesis 32: 24 (KJV) And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. 25 And when He saw that he prevailed not against him, He touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with Him. 26 And He said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And Jacob said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. 27 And He said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 28 And He said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. 29 And Jacob asked Him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And He said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And He blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

Same (NIV) 28 Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men, and have overcome." 29 Jacob said, "Please tell me your name." But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?" Then He blessed him there. 30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared."
The understanding that "God's people".... in ancient historical times, and in Biblical times, and today.... are "Israelites", is critically important for at least two reasons. First, this understanding is Biblically "true", and correct; and it is "substantiated" scripturally, as shown above in the quotations. Secondly, it must be understood that the Bible is one single book about God, and that the revelations and promises from God in the "Old Testament" are just as true and just as pertinent for God's people, today, as are the truths from the "New Testament".

The Bible is not two separate books, with an "old" book that is simply historical and aimed toward the geographical Israelites; and then a "new" book which abrogates the "old" book, and which proposes "new" or different concepts about God. The God of the New Testament is the same God as the God of the Old Testament. Furthermore, in His teachings, Jesus Himself (God-Incarnate) frequently included quotations from what we humans later called the "Old Testament". Likewise, Paul repeatedly cited scriptures from the "Law and the Prophets", of the "Old Testament". The very fact that both Jesus and Paul frequently quoted "Old Testament" scriptures, indicates that both of them clearly considered the "old" scriptures to represent the truth of God.

Furthermore, Jesus Himself said in:
Matthew, 5: 17-19 (NEB) "Do not suppose that I have come to abolish the Law, and the prophets. I did not come to abolish.... but to COMPLETE. I tell you this: so long as heaven and earth endure, not a letter, not a stroke, will disappear from the "Law" (part of the "Old Testament) until all that it stands for is accomplished."

I know that there are those individuals (and "denominations") that want to discard the "Old Testament" as being simply a "history of the Jews". Those who feel that way might say that God's promises to the "Old Testament" Israelites are not relevant to us today. That understanding, I say, is simply wrong.

To repeat my understanding: the Bible is one undivided Book, a magnificent on-going revealing from God, about God. The "old" part of the Bible, addressed to God's "Israelites", is just as much applicable to us "non-Jews" (the "Spiritual Israelites"), today, as anything stated in the the New Testament.

No..... God did not change Himself when He came to earth as Jesus (God-Incarnate). God came to earth as Jesus to "complete", and "fulfill", what God had planned for God-the-Son -- all along. In addition, as the following scriptures indicate, Jesus came to proclaim and explain and reveal the true "Kingdom of God".... not a rigidly restrictive and legalistic "kingdom-of-humans", that sought to exclude (by doctrinal laws, rules, rites, regulations, and tradition) all those who were not genetic Jews, or geographical "Israelites". Note the following scriptural quotations:

Mark 1:14 (KJV) Jesus came into Galilee preaching the gospel of the Kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand."

Luke 4: 43 (KJV and NASV) Jesus speaking: "I must preach the Kingdom of God, for I was SENT for this purpose."

See my chapter on the : "
The Kingdom of God" (linked).

And, finally, contemplate the following Biblical reference, which encapsulates some of the spiritual points which I have been attempting to "capture":

Ephesians 2: 11 (NIV) Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles (non-Jews) by birth, and called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (that done in the body by the hands of men) -- 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of the promise..... without hope, and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ 14 For He himself is our peace -- who has made the two one, and has destroyed the barrier.... the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by abolishing in His flesh the Law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in Himself ONE NEW MAN out of the two, thus making peace.... 16 and in this one body to reconcile BOTH of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away, and peace to those who were near. 18 For through Him we BOTH have access to the Father by ONE SPIRIT. 19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people, and members of God's household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together.... and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in Him, you too are BEING BUILT together to become a dwelling in which GOD LIVES, by his Spirit.

And, remember: God is the same: yesterday, today, and forever.

Yes, God's people, before and since the advent of God-Incarnate, are indeed "Israelites". My hope is that God has included me as an "
Israelite". What about you?

"Chosen by God"

Modified version -- from "The Doctor's Terrific Tablets"

TABLET #7 -- CHOSEN by GOD
God's Selective Process

Click HERE for Easy-Print format of this Tablet

In the Bible, there are many, many references to those human individuals who have been "chosen" by God..... and to those who are "destined", or "predestined", to be God's own people; and to those individuals who are the "elect" of God. Note the Biblical references on this subject, quoted below. Other scriptures are quoted later in this "tablet". Read all of these out loud, so that you may "hear" and "see" what God says on this subject:

Ephesians 1: 11 (NIV): "In Him we were also chosen -- having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything, in conformity with the purpose of His will".

Ephesians 1: 4 (NEB) "In Christ, He chose us, before the world was founded, to be dedicated, to be without blemish in His sight; and He destined us -- such was His will and pleasure -- to be accepted as His sons, through Jesus Christ."
Same (NRSV) 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 just as He chose us in Christ, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless before Him in love. 5 He destined us for adoption as His children, through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of His will.

Jeremiah 1: 4 (NRSV) Now the word of the LORD came to me saying, 5 "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; and before you were born, I consecrated you.

2 Corinthians 1: 21 (NEB) "And if you and we belong to Christ, guaranteed as His, and anointed, it is ALL God's doing. It is God, also, who has set His seal upon us; and, as a pledge of what is to come, has given the Spirit to dwell in our heart."

John 6: 44 and 65 (NIV) (Jesus speaking) No one can come to me, unless the Father who sent me, draws him.... 65 He (Jesus) went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me, unless the Father has enabled him."

John 6: 44 and 65 (NRSV) No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father, who SENT ME; and I will raise that person up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard and learned FROM THE FATHER comes to me.... 65 And He said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me, unless it is GRANTED by the Father."

2 Thessalonians 2: 13 (RSV) "We give thanks for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because God chose you, from the beginning, to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit, and belief in the truth."

John 15: 16 (NRSV) (Jesus speaking) You did not choose me.... but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit -- fruit that will last -- so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17 I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. 18 "If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. Because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world -- therefore the world hates you.

Psalm 28: 7 The LORD is my strength and my shield -- in Him my heart TRUSTS; so I am helped.... and my heart exults -- and with my song I give thanks to Him. 8 The LORD is the strength of His people. He is the saving refuge of HIS ANOINTED. 9 O save your people.... and bless your heritage. Be their shepherd -- and carry them.... forever.

1 Corinthians 1: 23 (NRSV) ....but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews, and "foolishness" to Gentiles. 24 But, to those who are the called.... both Jews and Greeks.... Christ is the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 25 For God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom; and God's weakness is stronger than human strength.

2 Timothy 1: 8 (NIV) So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us, and called us to a holy life -- not because of ANYTHING we have DONE.... but because of His own purpose, and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus, before the beginning of time.

Same (NEB) It is He (God) who brought us salvation, and called us to a dedicated life, not for any merit of ours, but for His own purpose, and His own grace. granted to us through Christ Jesus from all eternity.

Romans 8: 29 (NEB) "For God knew His own before ever they were....; and it is these, so fore-ordained, whom He has also called ...."

Romans 8: 31 (NRSV) What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us?.... 33 "Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies".

(JNT Note: To "justify" means "to make just", or to make "righteous". God "justifies" those whom He has chosen. That is -- it is not man, not "the church", not "baptism", not the minister, not we ourselves, not our works, not "pretend-belief", and not our reciting creeds..... that have any part in deciding who is, or who will be, "justified" by God. "It is God who justifies".... not God plus something, or anything else.)

Can any genuine "believer" in God -- anyone who recognizes (believes) the validity of the Bible -- refute the message and intention of these clearly-stated Biblical quotations? If you consider the Bible to be your source of spiritual edification, will you contradict that which is so frankly and repeatedly stated? (There are many additional references, below.) If, as I believe, the Bible is correct and true in portraying God's message to His people -- then how can a "believer" dispute what these scriptures precisely indicate? (See link The Bible; the Gold Standard of Spiritual Truth.)

Those who refute or deny these overt Biblical statements about the "called" and the "chosen", are rejecting the Biblical message from God. And yet, many of us have heard a "minister", or a priest, or a church-goer (those who most loudly proclaim the "inerrancy" of the Bible), tell us that nothing can make them believe and accept that God has "chosen" certain individuals, in advance; and that God has fore-ordained these individuals to be His "elect" -- that is, those whom God claims and includes as His own. Some "religious" and churchy people, in spite of numerous scriptural references asserting this principle, simply cannot accept and understand that there are individuals who are "chosen" by God (and, hence, that there are other human individuals whom God has NOT chosen). (See link
Enemies of God.)

Note the following Bible-references concerning those individuals who are "chosen" by God; and, contrariwise, note the references concerning those human-beings who are (or have been) "hardened" by God... and therefore not "included", by God:

Romans 11: 5 (NIV) So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. And if by grace, then it is no longer by works -- if it were, grace would no longer be grace. What then? What Israel sought so earnestly, it did not obtain; but the elect did. The others were hardened, as it is written (Paul quoting Isaiah 29: 10): "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes so that they could not see, and ears so that they could not hear -- to this very day."

Romans 9: 15 and 18 (NIV) For He (God) says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy. 18 Therefore, God has mercy on whom He wants to have mercy -- and He hardens whom He wants to harden.

Same (Romans 9: 18 [NRSV]) So then He has mercy on whomever He chooses.... and He hardens the heart of whomever He chooses.

Romans 9: 20 (NIV) But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to Him who formed it, `Why did you make me like this?'" 21 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes -- and some for common use? 22 What if God, choosing to show His wrath and make His power known, bore with great patience the objects of His wrath -- prepared for DESTRUCTION?
23 What if He did this to make the riches of His glory known to the objects of His mercy.... whom HE prepared in advance for GLORY!
(Author's note: verses 21 and 22.... made for "common use", and "prepared for destruction".... seem to be further references to those who are NOT "chosen".)

I have said before, in other "tablets", that we human-beings may not comprehend all that is stated in the Bible, but that "Godspeople" (God's people; linked) do believe and accept the Bible.... even where they may not agree, or understand. Otherwise, Godspeople would be "picking and choosing" from the Bible -- according to their own human guesswork; and they would be attempting to restrict and limit and circumvent God, based on earthly perceptions and "standards". Or, they would be attempting to elevate their own knowledge to that of God Himself.... as if to suggest that God is wrong, or unjust, or "unfair"; or as if to say that we humans are better qualified than God to establish God's fairness and truth -- "truth" that we in our human "wisdom" can hardly begin to "see" and comprehend.

God's Word, the Bible, states very clearly that there are those whom God favors ("chooses"), for reasons that we worldly humans do not understand. God chooses His own.... we humans do not "choose" God! God's people "hear" God's words; and they believe His message; and God's people follow, and "respond" (See
Responding to God) -- even where they do not understand.

(One day, many years ago, when I was still active in the practice of medicine.... I was discussing "religion" with Maude Wyatt, one of my very special patients, who happened to be a member of a local "Primitive Baptist" church. I asked this patient one of the most "frequently asked questions" about "The Chosen". I inquired, "How can an individual know whether or not he has been included, by God, among 'the chosen'." Maude replied, "You cannot know, for sure." She then referred to an extremely interesting term.... "evidence of grace". She explained to me that some individuals demonstrate "evidence of grace" in their actions, and in their words, and in their "beliefs". Some individuals "feel" within themselves a self-satisfying "evidence of God's grace". Some people, not yet awakened by God.... have no awareness of the God-given "evidence of grace". And, supposedly, there are other human-beings who will never be awakened by God, to the truth about God.)

See link:
The Language of God.

Concerning the "language" of God, note these two Biblical quotations:

John 8: 47 (NRSV) Jesus's words: "Whoever is from God, hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear them, is that you are not from God. "

1 John 4: 6 (NRSV) "We are from God. Whoever knows God, listens to us; and whoever is not from God, does not listen to us. From this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error."

God does not wait helplessly for any human-being to "choose" Him, or to "make a decision" to accept Him. I know that some denominational churches teach that Almighty God, the sovereign, all-powerful Creator of the Universe, the Maker of all creatures on Earth, is fretfully wringing His hands, "waiting" patiently for each individual human-being to "decide to believe".... but, according to the Bible, that is just not the way it is.

Contemplate the following additional scriptural quotations, concerning the important spiritual understanding of "The Chosen". Read these out loud, so that you can both "see" and "hear" God's message:

Acts 13: 48 (NEB) "When the Gentiles heard this, they were overjoyed, and thankfully acclaimed the word of the Lord; and those who were marked out for eternal life, became believers."

Acts 10: 40 (NEB) "God raised Him (Jesus) to life on the third day, and allowed Him to appear, not to the whole people, but to witnesses whom God had chosen in advance."
Same (NIV) "He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen -- by us who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead.

Galatians 1: 15 (NEB) Paul speaking: "But then in His good pleasure, God, who had set me apart from birth, and called me through His grace, chose to reveal His son to me."

Ezekiel 34: 11 et seq. (NEB) "I myself (God) will ask after my sheep, and go in search of them. I will bring them out from every nation, and gather them in from other lands, and lead them home." 22 "Therefore, I will SAVE my flock, and they shall be ravaged no more. I (God) will judge between one sheep, and another." (See link, "
God's Sheep".)

Luke 2: 14 (NRSV) "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth, peace among those whom HE favors!

Deuteronomy 14: 1 You are the children of the LORD your God..... 2 You are a people holy to the LORD your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the LORD has chosen you to be His treasured possession.

Romans 9: 8-11 (NIV) In other words, it is not the natural children who are God's children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring. 9 For this was how the promise was stated: "At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son." 10 Not only that, but Rebekah's children had one and the same father, our father Isaac. 11 Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad -- in order that God's purpose in election might stand 12 not by works, but by Him who calls -- she was told, "The older will serve the younger." Just as it is written: "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."

John 6: 44 (NRSV) (Jesus speaking): "No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me..... 45 It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard and learned, from the Father, comes to me."

John 6: 64 (NRSV) Jesus speaking: But among you there are some who do not believe." For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. 65 And He (Jesus) said, "For this reason, I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father."

John 5: 21 (RSV) "For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He will."

Same, Jerusalem Bible: "The Son gives life to anyone He chooses."

Same (NIV) "The Son gives life to whom He is pleased to give it."

Matthew 24: 31 (NEB) Jesus speaking: "With a trumpet blast, He (God) will send out His angels, and will gather His chosen from the four winds, from the farthest bounds of heaven on every side."

1 Peter 1: 1 (NIV) Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ.... to God's elect.... strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, 2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit....

Isaiah 43: 7 (NEB) "Bring my sons and daughters from afar. Bring them from the ends of the earth. Bring everyone who is called by my name, all whom I have created, whom I have formed, all whom I have made for my glory."

Isaiah 43: 10 (KJV) Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am He. Before me, there was no God formed; neither shall there be after me. 11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me, there is no saviour.

Revelations 17: 14 (NRSV) These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for He is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with Him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

Revelations 13: 8 (RSV) "And all who dwell on earth will worship it.... every one whose name has NOT been written before the foundation of the world, in the book of life of the Lamb that was slain."

Psalm 106: 4 (NIV) "Remember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people. Come to my aid when you save them, that I may enjoy the prosperity of your CHOSEN ONES, that I may share in the joy of your nation, and join your inheritance in giving praise."

2 Peter 1: 10 (NEB) All the more then, my friends, exert yourselves to clinch God's choice and calling of you.

Acts 2: 47 (NEB) And day by day, the Lord added to thei
